STEAM

We are incredibly blessed to have Peter Menningen work with our students. Mr. Menningen worked in product development for Sears, Roebuck, and Co (Chicago) in the well-known groups of Craftsman, Kenmore, DieHard, and Ted Williams, where he created test equipment to do performance testing of potential products. His main education revolved around electronics, machine design, and computer systems.

Mr. Menningen has a passion for students to learn advanced electronics and has spent hours of his own time to provide experience in electricity-electronics-programming using Arduino and other technologies. This program is for students who have used a computer (some keyboard skills), have an interest in technology and wish to incorporate it into projects (Art, Science, Robotics, Engineering, Plant Sciences) that will further their skill sets.

The sessions will be structured to instruct about the basics of Electronics, Electricity so that the students are comfortable with the components.  The Programming component will show by demonstration and practice how to make basic microprocessors like the Arduino Uno perform simple and complex tasks using physical controls, sensors and displays. This is done by using raw coding (C++) in the Arduino IDE and a relatively new Visual Aid tool named Visuino. Each student goes through the engineering – program process on a project that they wish to complete.

Culinary club

We bring in local, trained, culinary professionals, restaurant owners, and friends who love kids and love to make good food, to teach our students. These beloved members of our DTCA ‘Ohana come from Italy, Brazil, California, the Big Island, etc. Not only do the students get to learn how to cook, they then have the privilege of delivering the meal to someone who needs it in the community.

These students also participate in making our annual Pastor Pancake Breakfast which serves a special breakfast for the pastors island wide. They also bake cookies during Christmas that the student’s hand deliver to the Pa’ia businesses.
